In this lesson, students will investigate how laws are passed in the Australian parliamentary system. Interactive games and scenarios help them develop a basic understanding of the passing of bills into law. Students will then follow the process of law-making by conducting their own class parliament. By role playing the different figures in government, students will understand the lengthy and complicated process of legislature in our government. Watching the video presenting information on our three levels of government, students will use the visible learning strategy, 3-2-1 Bridge, to analyse what they have viewed. Students will evaluate their understanding and knowledge of our Australian system of government and its origins through visiting the Parliamentary Education site and taking the interactive quiz. As an additional activity, students can critically analyse and present an opinion piece on the benefits of visiting Canberra and learning about our parliament.
Historical concepts addressed in this lesson are sources, cause and effect and significance.
