Key Concepts, Skills and Understandings

The lesson is a physical activity involving (mathematical) problem solving. Given one piece of information—the length of time European people have been in Australia—and some string, students develop an understanding of the length of Aboriginal peoples’ connection with Australia. The activity is suitable for a wide range of mathematical abilities as there are several ways to approach the task. It is suitable as a class or small group activity. (Each group will need a ball of string of around 50 m, with access to more as the most current accepted length of connection is 65 000 years.) Extension activities involve recording the data proportionately and thinking about this long connection
