Key Concepts, Skills and Understandings

Using the process of historical inquiry, students research the traditional ways of life for a group of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people. They brainstorm and choose a few key research questions, collect information (resources for some groups are supplied and students are encouraged to draw on local Aboriginal knowledge), communicate their findings and then reflect on what they have learned. It is envisaged that this lesson will run over a few sessions or involve independent home/library research. In an extension activity, students think about how Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples today might live a life that involves both traditional and non-traditional ways of living, or one that merges the two.

Focus Question

How did Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples live before the arrival of Europeans?
