Key Concepts, Skills and Understandings

In this supplementary lesson, students develop an understanding of historical significance. With the help of a series of prompts, and drawing on the research of classmates, they make a personal decision about which explorer made the most significant contribution to the ‘discovery’ of Australia. They then explain and defend their thinking. Again, opportunities are provided for students to change their mind in the light of new information. Extension activities involve considering whether Australia was discovered at all, and reflecting on the absence of women in histories of exploration.
