Key Concepts, Skills and Understandings

In this lesson, students will investigate and use historical terms eg colony, empire, and develop critical and creative thinking skills when analysing the development of the British Colonies. They will examine sources of evidence (maps of colonial development) to identify similarities and/or differences, and describe what they reveal about the past. They will use internet search engines, library catalogues and indexes to find material relevant to an inquiry. They will also compile and chronologically sequence key stages in the development of Colonial Australia including the date of European settlement in each state, the date the colony was established and the date of self-government. Historical concepts addressed in this lesson are sources, continuity and change and significance.
