Students will investigate the settlement and development of Australian towns and cities throughout the 19th Century. They will view and analyse a video of the spread of Australian settlements using a visible thinking organiser (it is advised that the video is paused on second viewing to ensure all students have read the information). Students create appropriate inquiry questions for further research into settlement patterns. They will view and analyse high resolution, original maps of the colonies and develop their comprehension through completing the corresponding quiz cards. After reading the relevant information on their chosen Victorian settlement, the students will create a chronological timeline of its history (this could be an independent or partner activity). They will also investigate the difficulties and challenges faced by the new settlers when playing The Settler’s Race game.
Historical concepts addressed in this lesson are sources, continuity and change, perspective and cause and effect.
