Key Concepts, Skills and Understandings

In this lesson, students will investigate the impact European settlement may have had on Australia's natural environment. They will view and analyse a video describing the natural flora and fauna of Australia. The students will then create original quotes to describe the natural environment the early settlers would have encountered. They will also identify, research and describe the impact of introduced animals on the landscape. Students’ work could be arranged to create a rogue’s gallery class wall. Researching individual topics on environmental impact, students will then gather back in a group to share and discuss their learning with others. After investigating the term sustainability, students will identify and analyse the enterprising ways the new settlers adapted to their environment.
Historical concepts addressed in this lesson are sources, continuity and change, significance and cause and effect.
