Key Concepts, Skills and Understandings

In this lesson, students will critically analyse inquiry questions and offer hypothesis on the reasons why migration was encouraged by the authorities. They will use their knowledge of topic vocabulary to create a word storm of pull factors and view, question and infer meaning from a range of stimulus material eg posters and paintings about migration and settlement. Through viewing paintings and images, students will empathise with the settlers’ plight and consider their feeling and emotions travelling far away from family and friends. They will reflect on their own family history and investigate whether they may have migrant ancestors from colonial times.
Historical concepts addressed in this lesson are sources, cause and effect, perspective and empathy.
