In this lesson, students will identify when groups of migrants arrived in the colonies and create a timeline of migration in the 1800s. Students will understand chronological sequencing and publish their timelines using digital technology. They will view and analyse a visual and musical representation of migration over the years and use their creative skills to design and produce their own presentation to share with their peers. Their presentation will further reflect their understanding and comprehension of the topic of migration to the Australian Colonies. As additional activities, students may play an interactive game about new settlers, featuring a house in Ballarat, then analyse the stories of houses featured in a TV documentary. They can extend their inquiry skills by conducting a local investigation of historical houses and early migrants in their local area.
Historical concepts addressed in this lesson are sources, continuity and change and significance.
