Students will analyse the meaning of historical significance and influence by examining individuals and groups who have impact over the population.
Using various engaging sources to analyse significance, impact and legacy, students will conduct a case case study on Governor LaTrobe, the first Governor of Victoria. They will then investigate the significance and legacy of other colonial leaders and research and present their findings on the achievements of their chosen figure. Students will compare colonial governors and how they were chosen with the way our current state and national governors are chosen. They will investigate the changing of place names and the debate over historical statues and examine the differing viewpoints and perspective of people in the past compared to current viewpoints, developing an understanding that history and people’s perception of the past is continuously evolving and changing.
Historical concepts addressed in this lesson are sources, continuity and change, significance and perspective.
