Key Concepts, Skills and Understandings

In this lesson, students will identify and investigate influential and significant Australian figures of the 19th Century. The song, Making a Place for Me, will introduce the students to the life and legacy of Mary Reibey. Students will then choose another influential character to investigate and present a report on their achievements and legacy using the In the Spotlight graphic organiser. Students will then investigate some infamous characters and use their critical thinking skills to create a debate about the influence and significance of Bushrangers on our Colonial History. An additional activity would be to use their creative talents to create their own version of Making a Place for Me, featuring their chosen historical figure.
Historical concepts addressed in this lesson are sources, significance and perspective.
