Key Concepts, Skills and Understandings

Students investigate the foundation and meaning of Federation. Identifying prior knowledge, they will study key words eg federation and colonies and then analyse and identify the key elements of the development of Federation. Through a collaborative game, students identify and learn about the history of the Australian Colonies combining into federated states.
They will conduct a research inquiry in to the state of the colonies prior to Federation and identify social, economic and political aspects of life in the colonies and the cause and effect of events and developments in the late 1800s. They will examine the Federation debate through role play and investigate the role of advertisement and propaganda during the Federation debate through analysis of songs and imagery.
Historical concepts addressed in this lesson are sources, continuity and change, significance, cause and effect and perspective.
