Key Concepts, Skills and Understandings

In this lesson, students will analyse the video, Birth of a Nation and investigate the first opening of parliament through a study of The Big Picture painting by Tom Roberts. Using the visible thinking routine; See, think, wonder, they will investigate the characters and events depicted in the painting. Using the internet and other reliable sources, students will investigate cause and effect and change and continuity through researching the road to federation; creating a chronological timeline of the key events leading up to federation.
Conducting an inquiry into the key figures who influenced the road to federation, students will analyse their significance through creating a collaborative game. They will also critically analyse a what if? scenario (what would Australia be like if federation hadn’t happened?) and investigate ways federation was marked and celebrated.
Historical concepts addressed in this lesson are sources, continuity and change, cause and effect and significance.

Focus Question

What events led to federation and who were the key figures involved?
